| portal pumpkin |
[Dec. 13th, 2008|12:58 am] |
I bought a pumpkin to carve for Halloween, because for the first time since leaving Iowa I actually live somewhere where trick-or-treaters stop by, but I didn't actually get around to carving it in time. Oops. So some time in early November we decided to throw a party (because the house needed cleaning, see) -- with a theme of "Winter Drinks," so hot cocoa and eggnog and cider and mulled wine and a bunch of other stuff -- and I decided that we could use the pumpkin as a centerpiece.
Since our apartment's name is the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, a reference to the Valve game Portal (which is excellent, btw), I'd been planning to carve something Portal-related. And hey, something Halloween-ish would be wrong. So! I stole^Wborrowed the design from this Penny Arcade shirt referencing Portal (http://www.pennyarcademerch.com/pat070441.html) and carved it (with minor modifications so the pumpkin wouldn't fall apart). And thus what you see, artfully arranged on the table amongst the food for our party. :-)

| Lights! |
[Dec. 12th, 2008|12:58 am] |
ETA: Oh hey, it did post! The perils of playing around with new technology (viz. Pixelpipe) right before bed.
Anyhow, I got bored and put up lights! (An activity which was slightly exciting, as it involved both climbing on a step ladder around all the things in my room and attempting to hammer in little plastic clips which were designed to be velcroed and not nailed into the walls, and a midnight run to the drugstore (yay 24-hour drugstores) to buy another strand of lights since the two I had weren't long enough. Unfortunately they just had white lights and not colors, so I had to run to a different drugstore the next morning.) And then I took pictures of them with my (shiny new Android G1) phone, which has better picture quality than my laptop but is hard to hold still while taking pictures.
Adding in work, this is pretty much the texture of my life right now. I'm happy with that. :-)

| Apple Pie |
[Nov. 10th, 2008|08:27 pm] |
My very first, completely-made-from-scratch apple pie. (Yes, the crust too.) I struggled some with the crust, but it came out way better than I expected -- despite having to wad the bottom up once and re-roll it, it's still very nice and flaky. The fruit is half Macintoshes and half Macouns from my family's apple picking trip up to Ipswitch in early October, so they were getting on a bit, and I left the peel on because I don't believe in peeling apples for anything, even pie, but it's still tasty.
It even has my family's traditional pie crust vent pattern, viz. two stalks of wheat. Or at least that's what it's supposed to look like -- my first attempt came out as more like the footprints of a strange and badly-pronated bird. But it prevented the pie from exploding, so it's all good. :-)
And of course I had to take a picture of it and post it to Flickr. Forgive the crappy laptop-camera picture -- it's the only digital camera I have right now. (Fixing it soon, probably.) But I did want to share, because I feel all proud and accomplished now.

| Chorallaries concert tomorrow! 8p, 10-250! |
[May. 3rd, 2007|11:33 pm] |
It's been a... bit of a stressy term, and a bit of a stressy week, but tomorrow one of the big things will be finally done --
The Chorallaries of MIT 30th Anniversary Concert Friday 4 May 2007 (this evening!), 8p in 10-250 on the MIT campus
FREE!
and, since it's the Chorallaries' birthday, we're having FREE CAKE! (I, myself, made ten cakes to contribute to the giant birthday cake, for a total of about forty. We'll have a lot of cake on our hands if you don't come help us out.)
We've got a really awesome set lined up, and our alumni have some surprises in store... It should be an awesome show.
(edit: argh got the date wrong. that's what I get for posting right before bed.) |

| Chorallaries Concert! |
[Nov. 26th, 2006|04:47 pm] |
So. I'm still alive. If I owe you an e-mail, I apologize for my tardiness. Being a student is, err, hosing -- whoda thunk. :/
Continuing to consume my soul is... the Chorallaries! Our fall concert is coming up on December 9 at 9 PM in 10-250. It should be a good show. :) We've even got, like, a guest group lined up and everything, although I don't remember who they are.
We'll be singing:
"Over My Head (Cable Car)". originally by The Fray "Breathe (2 AM)", originally by Anna Nalick "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)", originally by Nine Days (and covered by 3 Doors Down?) "The Tower", originally by Vienna Teng "Rainbow Connection" -- yes, the Kermit the Frog one, in an awesome arrangement by our musical director
Hope to see people there! |

| Chorallaries Spring Concert! |
[May. 8th, 2006|12:54 pm] |
Because I haven't had enough Chorallaries in my life recently... we're having our Spring Concert this Saturday!
It's at 8:30 PM at MIT in 10-250 on Saturday 13 May -- admission is free. It should be a fairly short concert (~1 hour), since we don't have a guest group. It should be a good concert, since we'll be singing most of our contest set, as well as four new songs and four old songs for our outgoing seniors. (I may not actually be singing, since I've got a cold and have less than an octave range, but I'll still be there.) It would be neat to see people. :-)
(Oh, by the way -- there's video of us performing backstage at the ICCA Finals about halfway through Episode 15 of the A Cappella U podcast (http://www.acappellau.com), along with an interview with our president and video of some of the other groups. It's a good show.) |
